Sensex, Nifty Set To Open Lower In Cautious Trade

The Sensex has so far touched a high of 34,604.76 points and a low of 34,465.49 points during the intra-day trade.

Mumbai- The Indian equity indices witnessed a volatile trade session on Monday and closed on a flat-to-positive note as healthy quarterly results drove investors' sentiments.

Pharma stocks Lupin Ltd and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd rose 1 per cent each.

The broader markets underperformed the benchmark index, with the S&P BSE mid-cap index closing lower by 0.02 per cent and the small-cap index by 0.13 per cent. In contrast, the BSE market breadth remained bearish with 1,479 declines and 1,191 advances. The Nifty 50 too couldn't sustain its gains of 56 points and closed only 20.70 points higher at 10584.70.

Indian markets ended higher on Tuesday.

In terms of investments, provisional data with the exchanges showed that foreign institutional investors sold scrip worth Rs 259.08 crore, while the domestic institutional investors purchased stocks worth Rs 387.26 crore.

On the currency front, the Indian rupee strengthened by 10 paise at 66.38 against the United States dollar from its previous close at 66.48.

Sector-wise, energy index surged 2.39 per cent, followed by oil and gas by 1.50 per cent, capital goods 0.65 per cent, infrastructure 0.51 per cent, healthcare 0.45 per cent, bankex 0.40 per cent, auto 0.39 per cent and FMCG 0.10 per cent. Meanwhile, shares of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Monday surged over 4 per cent, following which the IT major became the first listed Indian company to hit market capitalisation of over Dollars 100 billion (Rs 6,80,912.10 crore).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Reliance Industries (3.70%), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.94%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (1.74%), ICICI Bank (1.66%), HDFC (1.31%) and Larsen & Toubro (1.25%).

Shares of HDFC Bank Ltd rose as much as 1.2 per cent to ₹1,979 in early trade before slipping into negative territory.
