Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a "disaster" and said "Israel was grieving over the promising young lives that were cut off by this tragedy".

A flash flood struck a group of 25 teenagers hiking in Israel's southern desert Thursday, sweeping 10 of them to their deaths as an unseasonal storm hit the region, Israel's police said in a statement.

It is common for Israeli teenagers to take a gap year following the completion of high school before they start their compulsory military service in order to further their studies.

The hike the students were on was meant to be a "bonding trip" for them, according to officials.

The academy's principal is reportedly one of two staff members who have been detained on suspicion of death by negligence.

Magen David Adom CEO Eli Bin told an Israeli radio station that the rescue teams are "racing against the clock to save lives". We also send out a Weekly K+R Update, bundling together all the K+R news of the week.

The rescue operation includes three Yasur military helicopters, two Blackhawk helicopters, an Apache, and troops with the army's special Unit 669 rescue force.

President Reuven Rivlin also said the nation is praying.

Police spokeswoman Meirav Lapidot told reporters before the announcement of the dead teens, "We will keep going until we find them all". Heavy downpours can cause flash floods to roar down the riverbed. We're following the situation in the south closely and are sending a warm embrace to the effected families. The main question being asked was why the group had made a decision to continue with the hike in an area known for flash floods.
