Man Utd defender Young 'deeply affected' by Sir Alex illness

Ferguson's first words after coming round were said to be asking how his son's side Doncaster got on.

The legendary former Manchester United boss was rushed to hospital on Saturday for the emergency procedure and the footballing world has held its breath waiting for good news on his recovery.

SIR Alex Ferguson is showing promising early signs of recovery, is out of a coma and sitting up talking to family and friends.

United have thanked the many well-wishers, including Premier League managers Arsene Wenger, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, who have spoke of their admiration for Ferguson.

Former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, whose wife Annemarie van Kesteren suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2009 but later recovered, said he was "devastated" to hear the news "knowing all too well about the situation ourselves".

Michael Carrick believes that Alex Ferguson's wide-reaching influence has been reflected in the goodwill sent the way of the former Manchester United manager. United hasn't issued an update on Ferguson's health since saying he required "a period of intensive care to optimize his recovery".

"His family request privacy in this matter".

When asked if he expects Ferguson to make a swift recovery, Mourinho replied: "Yeah, we are confident".

"(I am) just devastated, absolutely devastated", he said.

"The most important quality is to be a man, M-A-N, capitals, a proper man and football is not full of them", said Mourinho.

He told family at his hospital bedside: "Aye, the Cup Final is out - but what about Kiev?" We wish him all well and to recover very quickly. "You are a fighter and a victor and we want you out of the hospital and back with us".
