Mets designate Matt Harvey for assignment after frightful start to 2018

Matt Harvey, once regarded as a premier pitcher who could have joined Tom Seaver and Dwight Gooden among the New York Mets' greats, refused a minor league assignment and will be designated for assignment Saturday.

The Mets are set to designate Harvey for assignment this weekend, a move that paves the way for NY to cut or trade the 29 year-old right hander.

At the moment, it is jarring for its tense - for the fact that Harvey will not take the field again in blue and orange, that at some point in the next seven days he will be elsewhere, that he is now a relic of New York's past.

Despite Harvey's reputation as a partyer, Alderson said he would miss Harvey.

Selected seventh overall in the 2010 amateur draft, Harvey made his major league debut in July 2012.

After being an All-Star in 2013, the future looked bright for Harvey.

For his career, Harvey is 34-37 with a 3.66 ERA. I don't know of many guys in his shoes who would have accepted it.

Just a few weeks after being moved to the bullpen by the New York Mets, Matt Harvey is close to joining another team.

Harvey, 29, embodied the rise of the Mets from a losing franchise to a World Series contender, but his time with the team was littered with brilliance, bravado, injuries and hard living. He goes down as one of baseball's best pure hitters - often compared to Pete Rose - and will be the first Japanese player voted into the Hall of Fame.

"In spite of issues all of us have from time to time, he was appreciated for what he brought to the New York Mets", Alderson said. Harvey lost his spot in the rotation and struggled in the bullpen. But Harvey gave up at least four runs in three straight starts this season while never pitching more than six innings.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway said he and pitching coach Dave Eiland both feel like they are partly to blame for Harvey's situation.

The announcement comes after Harvey pitched to a 10.50 ERA through four outings out of the bullpen.

Selected by the Mets with the seventh overall pick in the 2010 draft, Harvey made his big-league debut in July 2012 and became a major sports figure in NY - both at the ballpark and at Manhattan night spots.
