MPs warn child mental health plans 'lack ambition'

Responding to the report, Saffron Cordery, deputy chief executive of NHS Providers, said the organisation welcomed the select committees' "strongly worded critique", arguing that the report highlights the scale and urgency of the challenges that surround children's mental health.

Foundry North Shore, a Vancouver Coastal Health-operated facility that's comprised of more than 15 existing social programs and services all operating under one roof in Lower Lonsdale, officially opened its doors in September.

These centres are one-stop-shops that provide youth with health-care, mental-health and substance-use services, as well as social supports, under one roof, in a safe and judgment-free environment. Only about one-third of them connect with the community-based supports and services they need.

Launched earlier this week, "BeKind2TheMind", is a mental health initiative created to raise awareness of mental illness as well as "educate our community about the need for increased public investment in mental health resources and, most importantly, encourage people to be part of the solution", according to its website.

Mental Health American has developed a series of facts on the importance of and connection between physical and mental health.

Mary Bousted, general secretary of the National Education Union, backed the committee's proposal that the government gather independent evidence concerning the impact of exam pressure on young people's mental health. "You're not alone in this'". Many more young people could be reached, quickly, if the Government committed to the provision of counsellors in all secondary schools and colleges. "Participants will also have an opportunity to connect with more than 20 organizations and agencies in the mental health and wellness field".

The 9,000-square-foot Foundry facility is located at 211 West First St.

The Senior Designated Lead for Mental Health has the potential to make a difference, but the Government must seriously consider whether the role should be one for a qualified professional rather than a teacher.

Zielke de Montbrun encouraged residents to use the #getloud hashtag on social media to show their support for mental health.

"Mental health treatment for children continues to fall short on key standards, such as access and waiting times; the Tories" proposals do nothing to address these problems and will instead heap pressure on hard-pressed teachers and overstretched services.

Prevention is better than cure. The Government's plans will fail a generation.

"We also want the Government to make up the £2 billion estimated shortfall in council children's services funding to help ensure children get the support they need at an early stage and reduce the likelihood that their mental health will be affected".

A spokesperson for the Department for Education and Department of Health said both organisations "completely reject any suggestion that our plans lack ambition", and claimed the proposals will "transform mental health services for children and young people". Adverse childhood experiences such as poor attachment or through parental alcohol and drug abuse or domestic violence can have a bad bearing on future well-being and a preventative approach in the early years must be a core part of the Government's strategy.
