Pompeo Says North Korea Could Prosper If It Makes a Nuclear Deal

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday spoke with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to discuss his upcoming meeting with top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jong Un.

Trump's Iran announcement came earlier than expected - four days ahead of a May 12 deadline - and he made a point of mentioning that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was on his way to North Korea "at this very moment".

President Trump says his historic summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un will take place in Singapore next month.

Representative Jim Banks (R-3rd) says the release of three Korean-American prisoners is a positive sign.

While Trump's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal might be meant to show Kim Jong Un that the US president follows through with his threats, it may also reinforce fears that Washington's negotiations can not be taken seriously - and that Pyongyang still needs its nuclear deterrent to ensure its survival. Kim has said that North Korea now has the capability to strike the continental United States.

The secretary of state addressed concerns that the USA and North Korea have different objectives in mind when considering denuclearization, prompting doubts that the Kim regime will actually be willing to give up the weapons it has already built.

"My proudest part of this will be when we denuclearize North Korea", the president said.

Pence said: "I simply let them know that while we received this news with joy, that Otto was on all our hearts and the family was in our prayers".

She added that the process involving the United States and North Korea has moved in the right direction.

"The distance is also an attractive feature for Kim Jong Un, as Singapore lies 4,700km away from North Korea", he added. -North Korea summit in Singapore on June 12, government sources said Friday.

Red Velvet, a popular South Korean girl band, met with North Korean leadership after their concert there and described Kim as "warm" and their audience as "responsive, clapping a lot" although unfamiliar with most K-pop music.

She also underlined that US forces in the Republic of Korea have "played a crucial role for deterrence and peace and stability" and said the presence of troops in the area is a matter for the alliance between the USA and South Korea "first and foremost". "As talks continue between our countries, we must seek ways to hold the North Korean regime accountable and to increase diplomatic and economic pressure to end North Korea's threats to regional and global stability, as I've been calling for". A White House spokeswoman said they would be taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre in nearby Maryland for further medical evaluation.

The three men had been jailed for anti-state activities and placed in labour camps.

The following month, Trump threatens "fire and fury" if Pyongyang continues to threaten America, kicking off months of saber-rattling that set the world on edge.

Who are the freed Americans?

Abe congratulated their release as Pyongyang's forward-looking step ahead of its summit with the US, but stressed that many Japanese are still stuck in North Korea.

USA officials had looked at several sites other than Singapore for the historic meeting but each was seen as problematic.
