Start your engines: Putin driving truck, opens newly-built Crimean Bridge

Sarcastically, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the new bridge "will definitely be handy for the occupants when they have to urgently leave our Crimea".

'It's especially cynical that the bridge is opened shortly before the anniversary of the 1944 deportation of Crimean Tatars, conducted by the Stalinist regime (May 18, 1944 - 112 International)', he wrote.

Russian Federation annexed Crimea, a peninsula on the northern coast of the Black Sea in eastern Europe, in 2014, a move that was condemned by Ukraine and the West as an illegal land grab.

"Let me remind you, on my behalf to the Arbitration Tribunal of the UN Convention on the law of the sea was filed on protecting the sovereign interests of Ukraine, in particular, in connection with the illegal construction of the bridge Kerch", - said Poroshenko.

Russian President Vladimir Putin personally drove a Kamaz trip-truck, heading a column of construction vehicles, across the newly-opened bridge connecting mainland Russia with Crimean Peninsula.

"The European Union continues to condemn the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by Russian Federation and will not recognize this violation of global law", the European Union stressed. But many in Russia saw the move as restoring Moscow's rule over a historically Russian region.

Ukraine has condemned the project, which cost 228 billion rubles ($3.7 billion). In 2016 the USA imposed sanctions on Russian companies that were helping to build the bridge across the Kerch strait. "Many didn't believe these plans were possible", Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday ahead of the ceremony.

The Council of the European Union made a decision to impose sanctions against five individuals for election of the President of Russian Federation to the annexed Crimea, said President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

Putin is known to drive automobiles himself from time to time during working trips about the country. Up to 40,000 cars a day may cross the bridge travelling at a speed of up to 120 km per hour.

The railway bridge is not yet finished and has a deadline of the end of 2019.
