US Embassy road signs go up in Jerusalem

"If US President Donald Trump carries out his decision, he will inflame the entire region and threaten the US' interests there", Nabil Shaath, an adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said to Palestine TV in February.

According to a picture sent by Barkat's office, the white signs read "U.S. Embassy" in English, Hebrew and Arabic. In 1980, Israel annexed East Jerusalem and declared the whole city as its capital, a move that was rejected by most countries in the world.

In June 2017, however, like his predecessors, Trump signed a six-month waiver to delay the relocation, which would have complicated United States efforts to resume the long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Pres. Trump has left the question of his participation in the embassy opening in doubt for months, saying that he might come. Angry with Dancilas's proposal on Jerusalem, he publicly called on her to resign.

The global community largely recognizes Tel Aviv as Israel's capital. He said it was "not only illegal but will also thwart the achievement of a just and lasting peace between two sovereign and democratic states on the 1967 borders, Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security".

"By recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the seat of its government, we're recognizing reality", U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last week.

Approximately 800 American and Israeli visitors are expected at the inauguration of the new embassy in Jerusalem's Arnona neighborhood, but officials from other countries have also been invited.

Israel has expressed hopes that other countries will follow suit, though the move was widely condemned in the worldwide community. On February 23, the State Department announced the new embassy will open in May.
