Harry Kane dropped as England prepare to play B team against Belgium

"No, it's nothing that we have discussed", Dier said in the pre-match press conference.

England manager Gareth Southgate pointed to Germany's shock World Cup elimination as a warning that every nation is vulnerable at Russian Federation 2018. "We've not won a knockout game since 2006", he said in response to a journalist's question about who he would prefer to face in the semi-final. "We've learned an enormous amount from studying Germany as a team, last summer [at the Confederations Cup] not least, and implemented that".

Quite so. Even tonight's match against Belgium is unlikely to be the test that Southgate would probably like.

Southgate has made it plain that he wants that to be England, but nonetheless he won't be fielding his first XI, with Eric Dier, Gary Cahill, Phil Jones and Trent Alexander-Arnold all expected to make their World Cup bows.

However, Lukaku does look likely to be rested after picking up a minor injury niggle, while Kane may also be rested to give either Jamie Vardy or Marcus Rashford an opportunity to make their impression on the cup.

England had quite a torrid time against Tunisia and needed a late injury-time victor from Kane to ensure that they didn't share points.

England play Belgium at Kaliningrad Stadium at 7pm United Kingdom time.

"We've got loads of friends who were umming and ahhing whether to come", he said. I've never gone on the pitch and not tried to win the game or to take a draw.

"We want to win the game".

Speaking before the game, manager Southgate said he wanted to "breed a mentality that everybody in our squad wants to constantly win". "We have to keep building that belief and building those experiences".

Germany lost 2-0 to South Korea on Wednesday afternoon, meaning the holders finished bottom of Group F. It is the first time since 1938 that a Germany or West Germany side has not progressed beyond the first section of the tournament.

"Kane is strong, he has confidence right now, he wants to be the top scorer".

"In sport and in life you have to keep evolving".

Here's how you can watch the match and more.

Who wins England-Belgium? And where does all the value lie?

They'll play the winners of group H - one of Japan, Senegal and Colombia - in Moscow on Tuesday, kick-off 7pm.

Regardless, it's ironic that fair play points - the signifier of the team who, in theory, has played the most within the "spirit of the game" - could be the thing that separates the two sides and lead to an easier run at winning the World Cup. Tunisia and Panama are eliminated.
