Putin and Robbie Williams open World Cup 2018

An opening ceremony with Robbie Williams as the entertainment is always going to be, well, entertaining. Still, he also said that he would avoid performing it at the World Cup opening ceremony.

There will also be performances by the legendary Spanish Tenor and Opera Icon Placido Domingo followed up by his fellow opera singer and Peruvian Tenor, Juan Diego Florez. Russian Federation is an open, hospitable and friendly country.

It put the seal on a sensational and unexpected start to the World Cup for the hosts - and gives them a real chance of qualifying from the group stage.

Soon, the scene slowed down a bit, as opera singing flooded the field and a giant, feathered bird carried Aida Garifullina to meet Williams on the field.

The father-of-two promised an "unforgettable show" and invited viewers from around the world to watch his performance.

The British singer and songwriter was performing one of his hit singles "Rock DJ", and could be heard saying "I did this for free" before flipping the camera off. "As it was broadcast live, we did not know what would happen during Robbie Williams' performance and we apologize".

According to experts, Williams risks facing arrest and a fine for his one-finger gesture, if it is proved it was meant as an insult.

He didn't manage to steer clear of controversy entirely, however, after raising his middle finger to the cameras as he left the pitch.

This time, the ceremony will focus on musical acts and will take place much closer to kick-off, ... just half an hour before the start of the opening match between Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia.
