Stanley Cup Final Odds: Latest Spread and Best Bets For Game 5

The remarkable Golden Knights hadn't lost four consecutive games in their entire inaugural season before the Caps rolled them.

It was the first championship for a professional D.C. -based team in 26 years when the Washington Redskins won the Super Bowl.

With their club's first title within reach, a group of Capitals fans began to crowd around Washington's end of the rink two hours before game time and numbered into the hundreds, along with the usual Sin City showgirls along the glass, by the time the players hit the ice for warmup.

Washington Capitals center Lars Eller (20) celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal against the Vegas Golden Knights in the third period in game five of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final at T-Mobile Arena.

"When you get this close to the Cup, it's hard", Fleury said. Gerard Gallant, cast aside by the Florida Panthers 22 games into the 2015-16 season, has his team playing high-pressure, disciplined hockey, and the fact that he has been largely rolling four lines, has meant that some of his players have been getting more of an opportunity to shine than they had had at their previous clubs.

Days and weeks and months will pass and history will be more and more appreciated, but for now, the magical expansion season of the Golden Knights is over, its conclusion coming in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final.

The Caps cinched the Cup 4-games-to-1, beating the Golden Knights 4-3 in Game 5 on Thursday night in Las Vegas.

There was a lot of red in the place.

The Golden Knights enter the third period of Game 5 with a 3-2 lead thanks to a power-play goal, but there's room to debate if the 2-2 goal should have counted.

Washington leads the series 3-1, one win away from the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Vegas never got close to a tying goal. "For me personally, I don't try to think about it too much what's going on and just try focusing on different things".

However the Capitals have three spots free on their engraving list to dish out as they see fit, and the historical significance of Walker being a member of the team puts him in good stead for consideration.

Alex Ovechkin finally got to hoist the Stanley Cup. In 2000, established teams had only been able to protect nine forwards, five defensemen and a goalie, or seven forwards, three defensemen and two goalies.

"It feels nice but it's not over yet", Ovechkin, who has 14 goals and 12 assists in the playoffs, said of needing just one more victory to win the Stanley Cup.

Andre Burakovsky appeared to notice it first and pointed the fan out to many of his teammates.

Those decked in Vegas colors held signs throughout the stands, offering words of motivation and, well, some pretty straightforward advice. "I got my name on something so they'll know that dad played hockey when they grow up".

"Funny story, I was at [Leonsis's] house and we kind of met up with his family", Ovechkin said. "We wanted to finish it differently, but what an awesome experience".

Nearly as unexpected as the Golden Knights unprecedented inaugural season, this wasn't supposed to be the Capitals' season.

The Capitals arch nemesis, the Pittsburgh Penguins, took the eventual champs to six games Just like the Jackets did in their first round matchup.

That's the cruel part, of course, the immediacy of a final chapter.

The trick for the team and the National Hockey League will be the city and federal permits necessary for such a massive celebration.
