Testy Trump to ditch G7 summit early, White House says

The ban on mobiles in schools, one of President Emmanuel Macron's campaign promises, will take effect in September 2018. He engaged him on Twitter.

The French president added that he and Trump would have a "frank" exchange at the G-7 summit in Canada later this week, which leads me to conclude that perhaps Macron was just craving hot dogs that day.

The Trump administration said on Thursday it was moving ahead with tariffs on aluminium and steel imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, ending a two-month exemption and setting the stage for a possible trade war. But "neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be".

On the eve of the summit, Mr. Trump said little about his goals, but had messages for two of the leaders he plans to meet with. "Look forward to seeing them tomorrow".

Trump will descend Friday on the annual gathering, held this year at a Quebec resort, but will leave Saturday morning before the event is over, heading out to Singapore for his highly-anticipated summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

White House officials said Trump in recent days had bristled at attending the summit, where he is set to be challenged face-to-face on his policy decisions.

UNITED States President Donald Trump wants to end the three-party talks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta), aiming instead to deal separately with Canada and Mexico to restructure the trade accord, a senior adviser said on Tuesday.

"We also want to work together on the enforcement of the existing global rules and speeding up the development of a new set of guidelines for government-supported export credit".

"If you're a foreign leader you have to realize if you try to butter up Trump it doesn't really matter, it's a one way street".

The U.S. and the rest of the G-7 countries depend on each other for security and as economic partners, so the governments will have incentives to find some common ground.

Pleas by the other member countries for exemptions from the steel and aluminum tariffs, which went into effect on June 1, have fallen on deaf ears in Washington. But even though he has made his criticism of globalization a major part of his appeal to voters, Trump was the main target of a protest by around 400 demonstrators on Thursday night who set fire to USA and other G7 flags. "The six other nations of the G7 represent a market that is larger than the American market", Macron said.

Most recently, Trump pulled the USA out of the Iran nuclear agreement, following his earlier decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.

Leaders in Europe, Canada, and Mexico have vowed to retaliate against these tariffs with economic penalties against US exports, but so far Trump has been unmoved.

European and Canadian leaders have appeared to band together, ready to stand against Trump at the G7 summit.
