Thiem stands between Nadal and his 11th French Open title

Thiem stands between Nadal and his 11th French Open title

Truth is, there were not many the rest of the way, as Nadal finished with 35 winners and just 19 unforced errors.

If Nadal's march toward an 11th championship at Roland Garros was going to be stopped on this day, things were going to have to go del Potro's way right then.

"In every game that I served, I had problems. So there is not 10 more chances to keep playing here". I'm not sure if Thiem and Rafa had a run in the Bois de Boulogne that Rafa would win.

Although at times during the first set against Del Potro, especially when he was 0-40 down at 1-1 and 15-40 down at 4-4 it looked as though he might be in for a real scrap. Injuries have hampered the King of Clay throughout the past year. After the rain interruption, Nadal leveled and was leading 5-3 and serving at 30-30 when play was suspended for the day.

Thiem, who ended the Cinderella stint of Italy's Marco Cecchinato 7-5 7-6 (12-10) 6-1, is one of only three men to topple Nadal at least three times on the "terre battue".

Over the past two seasons, Nadal is 49-2 on red clay, with both losses coming against Thiem: in the quarterfinals at Rome in May 2017, and the quarterfinals at Madrid in May 2018. He's playing with big confidence. I know he has great potential. I expect that he will be a really good player on clay.

Nadal is now just the second man to reach 11 finals at the same Slam, equalling Roger Federer's mark at Wimbledon."It's impossible without hard work and going through tough moments".

Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic have won the French Open for their first Grand Slam title in women's doubles.

"Forget the 10 (French Open titles) and forget what happened a year ago, Thiem has to remember what happened in Madrid which is a title Nadal wants to win nearly as much as the French", Wilander, Eurosport's chief analyst, told Reuters.

The Czech pair beat second-seeded Andrea Sestini Hlavackova and Barbora Strycova 6-3, 6-2.

"Today I played more aggressive". I have a plan.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion has won the tournament 10 times.

Easing through the third set, Thiem became only the second Austrian player to reach the final of Ronald Garros, following in the footsteps of Thomas Muster, who won the title in 1995.

He put out seeded players Pablo Carreno Busta and David Goffin before the seismic shock of knocking out 2016 champion Djokovic in the quarter-finals. Cecchinato made some headway by repeatedly using drop shots, but Thiem eventually started tracking them down well. So I have nothing to lose tomorrow.

In the second-set tiebreaker Friday, Thiem went ahead 6-3, but missed out on three set points there, including a bad volley into the net at 6-4 that left him chewing ruefully on his left index finger.

"That was not a nice feeling". After a harrowing first two sets, Thiem needed only 21 minutes to win the clinching set.

Del Potro will be his opponent on Friday after eliminating No. 3 seed Marin Cilic 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 to make into the semifinals for the first time since 2009.
