Trump was nominated for the Nobel peace prize

The Nobels in economics, literature, physics and medicine are awarded in Sweden. Mr Obama's prize, conferred on him during his first year in office, attracted heavy criticism.

The lawmakers told Norwegian wire service Norwegian News Agency that Trump "had taken a huge and important step" toward peace with North Korea and disarmament.

It is noted that this decision has pushed trump's meeting with Kim Jong-UN.

But before placing your bets, you may want to read what some members of the five-strong Norwegian Nobel Committee, which chooses the victor of the $1 million prize each October, have written about the US president in the past.

A group of US lawmakers also are backing Trump's nomination for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. "His Administration successfully united the global community, including China, to impose one of the most successful worldwide sanctions regimes in history", the Republicans wrote in the letter.

Rep. Luke Messer (R-IN) and 17 other GOP House members said in their submission, "We can think of no one more deserving of the Committee's recognition in 2019 than President Trump for his tireless work to bring peace to our world". If trump received the award, he would be the fifth American President to be awarded this honor.

In their meeting, Trump and Kim pledged to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, and Washington committed to provide security guarantees for its old enemy.

Critics say it is too premature to hail Mr Trump's diplomacy in Korea as a success. The country participated in the Winter Olympics at the year's start, despite the games taking place in South Korea, a nation that it never technically ended war with.

It is unclear whether he was nominated for this year's prize, but he was also put forth as a candidate in 2016 and 2017. This year stands in stark contrast to last year, when Trump and Kim traded barbs and threats.
