Uruguay beat Russian Federation 3-0 to top Group A

Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani scored a goal each and Uruguay went on to defeat Russian Federation 3-0 on Monday, finishing undefeated in group play and handing the host nation its first loss of the World Cup.

Cherchesov's men fell further back after a fortuitous strike from Laxalt changed course following a deflection off Cheryshev's heel, leaving goalkeeper Igor Afinkeev wrong footed in the 27th minute.

Meanwhile, it had been a disappointing start to the World Cup for Edinson Cavani, but the PSG man finally got a goal for his country in the late stages of the match to extend the lead to 3-0.

After beating Saudi Arabia and Egypt to reach the knockout stages for the first time since the Soviet era, the host's limitations were painfully evident in the 3-0 loss to Uruguay. We wanted to play in the same way we did before.

Godin was denied a goal to cap a fine individual performance when Akinfeev somehow kept out his 90th-minute bullet header, but Cavani was on hand to stab home the rebound and seal the win. Written off as no-hopers before the World Cup, Russia head to the Volga River city of Samara for a game which will see the victor secure top spot in Group A following the elimination of Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

A total of 22 players from the Uruguayan national football squad appeared for a training session on the pitch of the 45,000-seat capacity Samara Arena amid searing summer temperatures of about 33 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit). Alexander Golovin had been the team's creative spark in midfield, but he was rested since another yellow card for him would have meant a one-game ban. Tomorrow's match will decide on the victor of their Group A, which also enrolls the teams from Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

At his 14th match at the tournament, and on the occasion of his 100th cap, Uruguay simply out-performed Russian Federation, and of course were for much of the game a player better off.

World Cup debutant Igor Smolnikov's red card in the 36th minute was the knockout blow for Russian Federation.

VOLGOGRAD, Russia - The oldest person to play in a World Cup match gave up a pair of goals, allowing Saudi Arabia to beat Egypt in a match between two teams that had already been eliminated.

Against Russia on Monday, Suarez scored from a free kick with a low shot that sailed past Russia's wall and into the right corner.

Earlier, a mix-up by Andres Iniesta and Sergio Ramos gifted Morocco its first goal of the World Cup.

- Edinson Cavani became just the second player to score a goal in three separate World Cup tournaments for Uruguay (2010, 2014 and 2018) after his strike partner Suarez. Both Spain and Portugal had a goal difference of plus-1, but Spain scored six goals in its three group matches while Portugal had five.
