Reports surfaced on Thursday that the bridge had been damaged in the Carr Fire.

The blaze, which is raging west of the park, has burned 45,911 acres and is 29% contained, Cal Fire said Friday morning. By Friday morning, it had more than doubled in size, spreading across an area the size of the District of Columbia.

At least 15 structures have been destroyed in the Carr Fire.

Firefighters and police "went into life-safety mode", hustling door to door to usher civilians out of harm's way, said Scott McLean, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire).

A firefighter works to battle the Carr Fire at a home in Redding, Calif., on Thursday. That fire, which destroyed five homes, is believed to have been sparked by arson.

The fire agency warned that these conditions included forecasts calling for high temperatures and ongoing dry weather. The California National Guard was summoned for help, the Bee reported. "Their efforts have been hampered overnight due to extreme fire behavior and challenging wind conditions".

A man driving through the Carr Fire near Redding recorded terrifying video that revealed near apocalyptic scenes.

The hamlet of French Gulch that dates to the Gold Rush era was evacuated after a vehicle problem ignited the blaze on Monday.

He said the fire burned over the bulldozer operator, who was hired privately, and his equipment. "The fire community is extremely heartbroken for this loss".

Firefighters say the inferno is unlike anything they'd experienced in their careers.

McTigue said their injuries were burns to face, ears, and hands. All three were released from the hospital, with one expected to received additional evaluation.

California Gov. Jerry Brown has declared states of emergency in Riverside and Shasta counties as fires burn on both ends of the state. Over the past two decades the fire seasons has become longer, stretching from May to November or December.

The blaze levelled at least 125 homes, leaving neighbourhoodssmouldering and 37,000 people under evacuation orders.

Multiple power outages were reported, the city said on its website, adding that the electric utility was shutting off power in its northern areas.

"I've never experienced something so terrifying in my life", said Liz Williams, who loaded up two kids in her auto and then found herself locked in bumper-to-bumper traffic with neighbours trying to retreat from Lake Redding Estates.

A Cal Fire spokesman could only confirm portions of west Redding were under evacuation.

"I don't think we can predict which way this fire's going to go, and that's why I didn't take any chances", Ing said.

"Really we're in a life-saving mode right now in Redding", said Jonathan Cox, battalion chief with Cal Fire.

"This was my house since I was born", he said, getting emotional. "It doesn't sound good".

Brandon McGlover, 32, will appear in court today accused of setting a massive blaze that engulfed 4,700 acres of countryside, as well as four other fires.

Allison Woods and Tamara Damante were providing live coverage of the fire for KRCR-TV in Redding when they announced the blaze was approaching their studio and they needed to leave.
