The Liverpool captain was the only England man to miss in the shoot-out that followed a 1-1 draw against Colombia, but watched with relief as Mateus Uribe's powerful effort hit the bar and Jordan Pickford denied Carlos Bacca.

England boss Gareth Southgate reportedly faces an anxious wait over the fitness of attacking duo Dele Alli and Harry Kane ahead of the World Cup quarter-final clash against Sweden.

ENGLAND were back in training today at their Repino base, just a day after beating Colombia in a penalty shootout. The celebrations, however, did not end in the field as Southgate and his boys took to social media to express their delight.

"The night before the game we all sat down - the keepers, goalie coach and the analysts - and went over everything that could possibly come up", he said.

Yes, on paper, this looks like a very winnable tie, but as we know, matches at this stage aren't won on paper and England fans just have to look to the Three Lions' record against Sweden for evidence of that.

But with the team moving on to the quarter-finals, life seems to have been breathed back in the country.

"He's done well in Germany, but the top four in England are very good sides".

Thirty minutes of extra time failed to celebrate the sides, before the young England team exorcised the demons of shootouts past with a 4-3 spotkick win.

"I just felt we had the resilience and belief to get over the line, whatever it was going to take".

The skipper and his team mates had kept their cool when it mattered most - for 120 minutes of a tense and tetchy game played at a Spartak Stadium which resembled Bogota, given the dominance of Colombia's passionate supporters.

Pubs across the town were packed for the match - arguably England's most significant for a decade - and the crowds went wild after Eric Dier's history-making spot kick.

"I think we need to try to defend football and I think we should do a little more to try and prevent certain situations knowing they might arise".
