Chelsea announce Conte departure

Maurizio Sarri flew to London yesterday to complete negotiations over his move to Chelsea after the club confirmed the departure of Antonio Conte nearly a day after he was dismissed.

Ex-Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri is expected to succeed his compatriot at Stamford Bridge.

He said: "If Jorginho moves to Chelsea, my agreement with Abramovich does not depend on Sarri becoming their next manager".

It was on the cards long before last season's FA Cup triumph, which came less than 12 months after he won the Premier League. After his appointment in the summer of 2016, the Italian enjoyed a hugely successful first season in England, instilling belief in a damaged Chelsea side and leading them to the Premier League title.

"We wish Antonio every success in his future career", the statement read.

But, despite winning the FA Cup last season - beating Manchester United in the final, Chelsea have ditched Conte ahead of the new campaign.

While Chelsea's pursuit of Sarri has been rocky since the end of the season, the club is already working on several transfers requested by the Italian, including a group of targets from Serie A.

Sarri has also presented a list of players he would like to sign.

Conte delivered trophies in his two years at Chelsea but also brought controversy.

The former Italy national coach returned to take training this week but the writing was on the wall and the drawn out process was reportedly due to how much compensation the club should pay Napoli for his likely successor Maurizio Sarri. Only the pay was improved, though, with Conte's contract still running for just another two seasons - hardly a show of commitment by either the club or its manager. The team will now play in the Europa League.

The former Empoli boss is not known as a big spender which might fit with the slightly more modern Chelsea era of tighter spending.
