England players share pain with fans online after World Cup defeat

Gareth Southgate has been promised free pizza for life after guiding England to the World Cup semi-final in Russian Federation.

Bobby Robson and Terry Venables, the last two men to lead England to semi-finals - at the 1990 World Cup and Euro 96 - left their jobs immediately afterwards.

But the turnaround has been remarkable and Southgate's leadership, along with his trademark waistcoat, have won the hearts of the nation and earned him a big reward.

On the game itself, he added: 'The first half was really good, we could have had a second goal - we had the chances.

"We might live in a time where sometimes it's easier to be negative than positive, or to divide than to unite, but England: let's keep this unity alive". I don't think over the six or seven weeks we've been together now that they could have given any more'. 'We will have some extra motivation because of that, for sure.

As the rain finally fell on Oldham this morning, the realisation will also have sunken in that every England football fan's dream of World Cup glory is also finally over.

"We've set a benchmark for how we work", he said.

"We, as a team, have made incredible progress and probably got to a stage where at the start of the tournament we would have considered a success". We have proved to ourselves and our country that it is possible.

"But for these players, many have come of age on an worldwide stage and I couldn't be prouder with what they've done".

"All these words from them we take, we were reading and we were saying: 'OK, today we will see who will be exhausted.' They should be more humble and respect their opponents more".

"They see a team that leaves everything on the pitch, which they have, and played with style". We enjoyed every moment as a nation, I'd like to thank all the staff and fans for being behind us.

"We wanted to go on and win it and we thought we had enough to go through but it wasn't to be".

"'They are favourites, but we will do our best to surprise them".
