Rangers trade Cole Hamels to Cubs

In 2015, Hamels threw a no-hitter against the Cubs on July 25th at Wrigley Field.

Butler, 27, has pitched to an 81 ERA+ across parts of five big-league seasons. The four-time All-Star won a World Series with the Phillies in 2008. It was the first against the team since September of 1965, now he'll get the chance to help out the Cubs as the go for their fourth-consecutive playoff appearances.

Hamels, 34, has a 5-9 record and a 4.72 ERA this season, but has been much better on the road - and away from hitter-friendly Texas - where he has a 2.93 ERA.

Around the same time as the Yankees' trade for Happ, Chatwood struggled through another rocky start at Wrigley, walking six Arizona Diamondbacks batters and failing to make it out of the fifth inning; the Cubs bailed him out with a walk-off win on an Anthony Rizzo home run. "We certainly know that", said Rangers general manager Jon Daniels, adding that the Cubs were one of four teams he had serious discussions about Hamels with on Thursday. He's pitched some really big games against teams I've been involved with and has done really well. The pitchers were Rangers teammates before Darvish was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers and later signed by the Cubs. "That was something I wanted to be able to do in Texas, and it didn't happen". He compiled a 3.98 ERA in two seasons in Chicago.

Quintana was acquired in a costly trade with the crosstown White Sox last July that included touted prospects Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease.

Butler will join the Rangers during their series this weekend in Houston.

The Cubs just activated Butler from the disabled list earlier this week after he had missed three months with a groin injury.
