Roma win race to sign Brazilian winger Malcom from Bordeaux

Barcelona made contact with Bordeaux following the failure to sign Brazil global Willian from Chelsea and, according to Italian media reports, made a bid larger than the reported fee of 38 million euros ($44.4 million) struck with Roma.

Barcelona have announced that they signed Bordeaux winger Malcom on a five-year contract.

"There has been an approach from Barca", the source confirmed, after Bordeaux had reached an agreement earlier in the day to sell Malcom to Italian giants Roma.

Malcom had been linked with Everton and Inter Milan but Roma announced yesterday they had agreed a deal with Bordeaux worth 40m euros for the Brazilian.

However, Spanish champions Barcelona swooped in with a better offer before he had boarded a plane for Italy.

Should the deal proceed it could have serious consequences for Chelsea midfielder Willian as he waits for Barcelona to match the Stamford Bridge club's £70m valuation.

He can play through the middle but is primarily a winger and he scored 12 goals last season to help Bordeaux to a sixth-placed finish, drawing attention from a number of European sides.

"He stands out due to his electrifying pace and his technique with the ball at his feet", the club added.

"Malcom is a daring, pacey forward with an ability to shoot from distance".

The La Liga champions have already secured two major signings in Arthur from Gremio and Sevilla's Clement Lenglet, and Malcom becomes the third.
