"The country is at a critical juncture right now", he said in the clip. "I have done what I could", he said. Maryam's legal team was still in Adiala jail to get the power of attorney but was unable to file the appeal before the court hours ended.

According to a private TV channel, both Nawaz and Maryam have been allotted temporary prisoner numbers. Broadcasters were warned in advance about their reporting and a ban on protests was placed on the city.

The former Punjab chief minister, who is now under fire for failing to reach the Lahore airport upon arrival of his elder brother and niece, Maryam Nawaz, has sent a letter to caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk and Punjab CM Hassan Askari.

Some 15,000 singing and dancing supporters lined the Mall, Lahore's main thoroughfare, ahead of Sharif's return from London, an AFP reporter there said.

The country's media regulator warned local news channels to abstain from airing statements "by political leadership containing defamatory and derogatory content targeting various state institutions specifically judiciary and armed forces", the regulator said in a statement.

A spokesman for Pakistan's Independent Election Commission, which oversees the polls, urged candidates Thursday to register complaints if they are being intimidated.

Authorities made a number of restrictive moves in anticipation of the procession.

After their return from United Kingdom on Friday night, the caretaker law ministry issued a notification declaring that the accountability court will conduct trial in the Flagship Investment and Al Azizia Steel Mills references against Nawaz Sharif in Adiala jail.

Shipping containers were placed across major thoroughfares by the Punjab government to restrict their movements. Among the PML-N leaders named in the cases are: Javed Hashmi, Uzma Bukhari, Marriyum Aurangzeb, Mubashir Javed, Raja Zafarul Haq and Mushahid Hussain.

Nawaz Sharif, Maryam and her husband Safdar were convicted and sent to jail last week in the Avenfield reference involving purchase of luxury flats in London. The fine was issued in British pounds, as that is where the properties are located.

With reference to the sentence given to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz in Avenfield properties case, Shehbaz said the trial of terrorists, not political leaders, is carried out in jails.

Sharif's son-in-law Mohammad Safdar was also awarded a one-year sentence.

The Avenfield reference is one of the three corruption references, filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP), which disqualified Nawaz Sharif, ousting him from premiership and finding him guilty in the Panama Paper case verdict. The Sharifs will most likely get a bail from a higher court and return to their constituents, claiming a victory against the Pakistani security establishment, which Nawaz Sharif has been openly lashing out at.
