The Rockets are going all-in on odd Carmelo Anthony plan

Carmelo Anthony #7 of the Oklahoma City Thunder looks on during the game against the Utah Jazz in Game Four of Round One of the 2018 NBA Playoffs on April 23, 2018 at vivint.SmartHome Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. Houston lost two of its top forwards so far this offseason, with Trevor Ariza agreeing to a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns and Luc Mbah a Moute agreeing to a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Melo recently opted in to his contract with Oklahoma City to garner $27.9 million next season.

A league source confirmed the meeting.

The Miami Heat are in the mix for Carmelo Anthony.

There you have it.

As Wojnarowski alludes to, the Thunder is most likely to find a trade that would send Anthony somewhere he would ultimately be waived, thus giving him the freedom to choose his preferred destination as a free agent on the open market. The Thunder would likely need to part with draft picks and/or young assets to complete such a move, but it would achieve the goal of lowering the massive luxury tax bill now hanging overhead.

Though the Heat would be very open to a trade for Anthony, the Thunder is reportedly looking to shed salary, not add the type of longterm deals that the Heat has been shopping.

It's a little surprising that Capela has gone this deep into free agency without a contract, but that is most likely related to him being a restricted free agent.

A move to Houston would see Anthony link up with close friend Chris Paul, part of the so-called "Banana Boat" crew along with LeBron James and Dwayne Wade.
