Thousands Protest Family Separations as Trump Blames Democrats for Border Crisis

Defending the work that they did and indicating that they provided a valuable and necessary service in protecting the American people from the "worst criminal elements", President Trump laid out a number of tweets indicating that there was absolutely no way that abolishment of ICE would take place under his administration.

Many anti-Trump activists, who are driving the Twitter hashtag #abolishICE, have celebrated the moves by Gillibrand, Harris and others.

Fueling its sudden ascent have been a series of recent shocks to the system.

Sen. Kamala Harris, California Democrat, has said that the US should consider "starting from scratch".

Two days after Ocasio-Cortez's primary, New York's Kirsten Gillibrand became the first senator and potential 2020 candidate to announce her support for the agency's elimination.

NY gubernatorial hopeful Cynthia Nixon, who has mutually endorsed Ocasio-Cortez, has thrown her support behind ICE's abolition amid continued mass opposition to Trump's "zero tolerance" policy, as has Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, also of NY.

"I think what has to change are the policies, and the people that are making these policies are making horrendous decisions like separating kids from their parents", she said on "This Week". But the family separation policy has been a watershed for attracting a broader spectrum of demonstrators, she said.

This week, however, things got even more interesting, as 19 ICE regional supervisors penned a letter (seen below) to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen, saying that the current administration's polices have put the agency in a bind. Calls for its dissolution, once rare, are spreading.

He continued by offering ICE agents a word of encouragement. Concerns over the public backlash to actions by the Enforcement and Removal Operations division were, they wrote, making HSI's work impossible.

Ice agents are under fire nationwide.

One Democratic aide in the House, who was not authorised to speak on the record, called proposals to abolish ICE "stupid" and said the strategy would "play right into Trump's hands".

Pocan noted that ICE's duties do not include monitoring the nation's borders and deporting those who enter the country illegally. "You rarely get anywhere through policymaking by hashtag".

"We are always going to need immigration enforcement".

Leading progressives, like Sens.

In Washington and across the country, thousands of people rallied to oppose the Trump administration's draconian immigration policies, including in Portland where dozens of protesters set up a protest camp next to an ICE facility. "We should abolish ICE", de Blasio commented Friday morning while being hosted by WNYC radio.

Amidst nationwide protests over immigration enforcement, the man at the center of the agency responsible served his last day Friday.

The "Abolish ICE" movement is certainly picking up steam.

"To the great and courageous men and women of ICE, do not worry or lose your spirit", Trump wrote in one tweet.

Activists and progressive leaders are pressing on, becoming more aggressive in their push to abolish the agency, an effort many in the movement view as both a way to open up the debate over decades of bipartisan USA immigration policy and, crucially, win elections.
