Audio Bulletin: Karunanidhi Death: Country mourns death of Dravidian politician

The medical bulletin released on July 31 had informed that the former Chief Minister requires an extended period of hospitalisation due to age-related overall decline in Karunanidhi's general health, altered liver function and haematological parameters. After Annadurai's demise, V.R. Neduncheziyan was a natural choice for successor and was made the acting chief minister.

In 1957, he was first elected to the Tamil Nadu assembly from the Kulithalai assembly of Thiruchirapalli district, one among the first 15 MLAs elected to the then Madras Legislative Assembly on a DMK ticket.

When Mr Annadurai died in 1969, Mr Karunanidhi, then in his 40s, took over leadership of the DMK.

This is a significant loss to Tamil Nadu Politics given that Jayalalithaa has expired very recently and tremors of the loss are still being felt in the state. "He's been a witness to everything that's happened in the state in the past six or seven decades", newspaper columnist Bhaskaran Krishnamurthy earlier told the BBC. However, a shameful episode in the state assembly that year proved to be pivotal for Karunanidhi and the party.

"As the DMK began to engage in electoral politics, the hard edge of social reform in its films was softened and the films increasingly became vehicles for promoting the party as such rather than reform ideology".

Karunanidhi's government was dismissed twice. DMK remained in the Congress-led UPA government at the centre till March 2013. One Dravida party, AIADMK, is already weakened by succession trouble. Right from the Sarkaria Commission's indictment in the late 1970s' to the infamous 2G Spectrum scam that saw partyman A. Raja and daughter Kanimozhi's jailed.

Stalin was accompanied by some party colleagues.

However, the astute caliber of Karunanidhi helped him outwit Neduncheziyan. His Madurai-based son Azhagiri who had several run-ins with Stalin was expelled from the party in 2014. The state government has presently allotted a place near Gandhi Mandapam for DMK patriarch Karunanidhi's burial.
