Florida Democrats kick off election race in Orlando

After DeSantis' monkey comment erupted online, Fox News anchor Sandra Smith raised it on the cable channel.

DeSantis won his primary by touting his closeness to Trump.

But while Trump's support for DeSantis might offer a target for Democrats, the Republican candidate is preparing a counterattack that will tie Gillum to supporters and policy positions that energized the progressive Democratic voting base but may not be popular with the majority of voters.

In an appearance on MSNBC's "Meet the Press Daily", Gillum told host Chuck Todd that the voters of Florida are "better than this". He could be the state's first black governor. It included Rep. Gwen Graham, who is the daughter of former Florida governor and Sen.

With Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum winning the Democratic gubernatorial primary in an upset, the national GOP is moving quickly to try and define him for Florida voters.

"He says you want to abolish ICE, you say you want to replace it, that's basically the same thing", Berman said.

"You can window dress it a hundred ways to Sunday as to what, trying to find a way to justify it for, but Floridians know what he's talking about", said former Florida Democratic Party Chair Allison Tant.

In his own Fox News interview, Gillum avoided directly saying that DeSantis's comments were racist, but said that DeSantis and other politicians who used "the campaign manual of Donald Trump" had gone from using dog whistle racist references to "full bullhorns".

"We are going to remind this nation of what is truly the American way", said Andrew Gillum, asking the crowd of supporters if they were ready to flip Florida blue. If elected, Gillum would become the first African-American governor of Florida.

DeSantis also came out fighting, criticizing Gillum as "way, way, way too liberal for the state of Florida".

"To characterise it as anything else is absurd", Mr Lawson said in a statement. Overall crime was down in Tallahassee past year but the city saw a spike in homicides.

The controversial remarks by Ron DeSantis are incurring the wrath of the church.

"With one tweet, that kind of put me on the map", DeSantis said.

A defiant DeSantis said, on Thursday, during a radio interview that the flak he's received for saying those words Wednesday amounts to "silly P.C. stuff" and that he was not sending "some double-secret coded message" about Gillum, who is black. Both candidates believe that the election will ultimately be about the mobilization of core Democratic constituencies - minorities, women, and working-class whites who feel economically left behind, despite President Trump's election.
