Former FBI Agent Thinks Putin Told Trump to End Russia Probe

Coats declined to comment on Trump's meeting with Putin, saying, "I am not in a position fully to understand what happened in Helsinki".

White House officials and Trump have long said it is time for Mueller to end his probe, present his findings to Congress and return to private life.

U.S. Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller wants to interview Emin Agalarov, an Azerbaijani-Russian pop star and former son-in-law of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, a lawyer for Agalarov says.

Last year, Sessions recused himself from any investigation related to the 2016 presidential campaigns soon after it came to light that he had failed to disclose during his Senate confirmation hearing contacts with Russia's ambassador to Washington.

Trump, in a series of tweets blasting the investigation, said Sessions should "stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further".

Some Democratic politicians said Mr Trump's tweets showed an intent to obstruct justice.

President Trump ordered his attorney general to fire special counsel Mueller and end the Russian Federation investigation "right now". She insisted the president's tweets are an "opinion" - but not an order.

Mueller already is interested in some of Trump's tweets to the extent they raise obstruction of justice concerns.

Trump said the charges against Manafort "have nothing to do with Collusion".

The President's lawyers had previously offered the special counsel written answers to obstruction questions and limiting the interview to matters before his presidential inauguration, which are largely confined to collusion.

He added: "There are two things specifically that are worrying Donald Trump at the moment".

Dowd, who resigned from the president's legal team in late March, has said that Mueller's team made clear they would consider subpoenaing the president if he refused to sit voluntarily for an interview.

Trump's protestations aside, Manafort worked on the campaign during a critical six-month period in 2016, during which he led the effort to ensure Trump won the Republican nomination. And with the midterms only three months away, critics have called on Trump to take a stronger stand. "We have every reason to believe they don't have anything". Trump has periodically launched barrages of public attacks on Sessions related to the special counsel's investigation.

But Trump's lawyers have been wary of a sit-down with prosecutors.

United States intelligence agencies concluded a year ago that Moscow meddled in the 2016 presidential campaign to try to tip the vote in Trump's favor. He suggested that Democrats' perceived detachment from working and middle class Americans' hardships reinforces the mounting impression that only Trump and the Republican Party speak for the downtrodden and left-behind.

"Had Trump directed a recused AG to terminate an investigation into his conduct and the conduct of those around him in private, we would nearly surely deem it a criminal act", says Joyce White Vance, a former federal prosecutor.

Trump asked whether his former top political aide was being treated worse than Al Capone, tweeting that Manafort is "now serving solitary confinement - although convicted of nothing?" Then you'd all battle whether he has the legal right to do that, which I think he does.
