John McCain Requested Barack Obama, George W. Bush Speak at His Funeral

Late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will become just one of 32 Americans to lay in state or honor in the Capitol Rotunda since it was established in 1824, according to Politico.

The president, who as a candidate in 2016 mocked McCain's capture in Vietnam, had jabbed at the ailing senator for voting against Republican efforts to roll back President Barack Obama's health care law. They will recall his efforts with the late Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy and others to achieve a resolution of the position of out-of-status immigrants, including the Irish, in the United States.

McCain, 81, the "Straight Talk" 2008 Republican presidential nominee and a Vietnam prisoner of war, died yesterday at 4:28 p.m.at his home in Arizona after a year-long battle with aggressive brain cancer. But, to me, more than anything, John was a friend.

McCain's office said a livestream will be available for the services at the National Phoenix Baptist Church and the National Cathedral.

"John McCain and I were members of different generations, came from completely different backgrounds and competed at the highest level of politics", Obama said in a statement.

Despite Trump's "not a war hero" comments, McCain initially endorsed Trump for president in 2016, only to withdraw his endorsement after the release of the Access Hollywood tape on October 7, 2016. John McCain was a man of deep conviction and a patriot of the highest order.

Flake said he also admired that McCain could see the good in his political opponents.

Trump feuded with McCain and has refused to talk about him since his death on Saturday. He was severely injured and spent more than five years as a prisoner of war. "Michelle and I send our most heartfelt condolences to Cindy and their family", Obama said.

A White House official said Trump also called McCain following word of the senator's diagnosis.

Mr McCain and former Senator Kerry played important roles in the normalisation of bilateral relations in 1995.

The senator had requested that both Obama and Geroge W. Bush deliver eulogies at his funeral, United States media reported.

John McCain reportedly asked that Donald Trump not attend his funeral.

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to offer a resolution to rename one of the Senate's three office buildings after McCain.
