Senate leaders honor McCain as Schumer proposes renaming Russell Senate Office Building

Marc Short, Trump's former legislative director, said the president faced "a little bit of a situation of a Catch 22" when deciding how to respond to McCain's death.

Weeks before a midterm elections, and with the next presidential race already stirring, remembrances of McCain will showcase the kind of values and policies that the Republican icon shared with his establishment contemporaries.

CNN previously reported that at the request of McCain, former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush will deliver eulogies at this service.

"It's outrageous that the White House would mark American hero John McCain's death with a two-sentence tweet, making no mention of his heroic and inspiring life", said Joe Chenelly, National Executive Director of AMVETS. The death of a vice president, chief justice, former chief justice or House speaker merits 10 days, and for a president or former president, the flag flies at half-staff for 30 days.

Trump and McCain were at bitter odds until the end.

McCain also wrote that recent judicial reforms and proposed legislation to decriminalize certain corruption offenses raised: "troubling questions", about the commitment of the government to "hold high-level officials accountable".

But the fact that Trump refused to apologize, and even prospered in the wake of the furor was an early sign that he understood the changing dynamics of the Republican Party better than anyone else, and was in the early stages of a successful takeover bid.

He has been remembered as a dutiful public servant who dedicated his life to the American people. He maintained that core American values would reassert themselves. He also touched on today's politics.

His last goodbye this week is likely to become an extended argument that for America to succeed, such conditions must not be allowed to prevail.
