Transfer: Zidane makes contacts with Manchester United, wants Mourinho's job

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has given his former club little chance to challenge for the Premier League title this season, and said Jose Mourinho's men seemed confused on the pitch in their league-opening 2-0 victory against Leicester on Friday.

Not much has been heard from the French World Cup victor since then although there were whispers that he was placed on a shortlist by Manchester United management as a backup should Mourinho decide to depart Old Trafford.

Zidane stepped down from his position a few months back after guiding Los Blancos to three back-to-back Champions League titles.

And according to the bookies, Mourinho is the second favourite at 6/1 to be the first Premier League manager to leave this season.

French newspaper, L'Equipe, reports that Zidane was already making contacts with Manchester United board as he considers taking over Mourinho.

Both Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young could start against Brighton in the next Premier League match for Manchester United.

The same article states that Manchester United believe the summer signing will take a full part in the training session but the suggestion is that Dalot will require a couple of weeks to get up to speed.

United finished 19 points behind champions and cross-town rivals Manchester City in the league last term and Scholes, who played more than 700 matches for United, said the club are lagging behind City and a strengthened Liverpool this season and does not see Mourinho's side eclipsing their rivals.

And Mourinho also disagreed with Woodward over the future of Anthony Martial, with the United manager ready to offload the French forward as opposed to wasting him on the bench.

"What he and [Lionel] Messi have done is just different, I don't think you'll see it again".
