Us Senator John Mc Cain Dead At 81

"No man this century better exemplifies honour, patriotism, service, sacrifice and country first than Senator John McCain", he said.

He began life in 1936 at a US naval base located next to the Panama Canal; the grandson of a four-star US Navy admiral and the son of a naval officer, who would also become an admiral.

McCain's death marks the end of an extraordinary life in which the son and grandson of two Navy admirals rose from the bottom of his class at the U.S. Naval Academy to almost winning the presidency. He narrowly escaped death in July of that year, when, while preparing for a routine bombing mission, an explosion on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal engulfed his plane in flames, killing 134 men on board.

McCain was taken prisoner and stayed in an infamous prison known as the "Hanoi Hilton". Four years later he was elected to the Senate, and he was re-elected five times.

"I understand the discipline and the things that go along about being a service person and protecting our freedoms", Edwards said. This Oct. 26, 1967, photograph shows Hanoi residents recovering him from the city's Truc Bach lake.

US President Donald Trump, who once mocked McCain's war record, said he sent his "deepest sympathies and respect".

But the War in Vietnam did not change his hawkish foreign policy positions.

"And all of a sudden, he pointed to the two of us and said, 'You two are right.' And that's when I knew he was going to vote no", she said.

He frequently criticized other Trump administration policies, including the decision to prosecute all those who illegally crossed the border to enter the US - a policy which resulted in children being separated from their parents at the border.

"I have long believed that Jerusalem is the true capital of Israel", he wrote in a statement on his website after the announcement.

"His support for Israel never wavered", he said.

Sections of the United States media labelled him a "maverick" for his seemingly independent streak but he was also noted for his ferocious temper, which spared few, even those close to him. Republican strategists and donors have also discussed former Sen. He chooses a virtually unknown governor as his running mate: Alaska's Sarah Palin.

Bush defeated McCain in a hard fought Republican presidential campaign in 2000 and later backed McCain's unsuccessful campaign to succeed him eight years later.

Faced with the party's accelerating rightward shift, in later years McCain positioned himself as a centrist within the party, and as an opponent of the populist platform that won Trump his nomination for the 2016 election.

In May, the McCain family was offended when it was reported that Trump aide Kelly Sadler dismissed McCain's opposition to the president's choice for Central Intelligence Agency director by quipping during a private meeting, "It doesn't matter, he's dying anyway". A storied war veteran and 36-year fixture in the US Congress, he forged a career unlike any other in recent American political history. The president said he liked those who were not captured better.

"When Mr. Trump attacks women and demeans the women in our nation and in our society, that is a point where I just have to part company", the senator said.

When Trump railed against the media, accusing many outlets of spreading "fake news", McCain hit back.

McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2017.

McCain stopped receiving cancer treatment last week, his family saying "the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict".

As speculation grows over what his passing means for the Republican party, tributes continued to flow in, including from his 2008 rival.

"Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did".

John McCain is greeted by President Richard Nixon 1973 after he spending more than five years in a Vietnamese prisoner of war camp.
