49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo out for the season with knee injury

The 49ers signed Garoppolo last February to a five-year, $137.5 million contract that included a total of $74.1 million in injury guarantees over the life of the deal.

It's a devastating blow to the 49ers and their young quarterback, who entered the 2018 season with major expectations.

The San Francisco 49ers' worst fears were confirmed Monday, when franchise QB Jimmy Garoppolo's MRI on his left knee revealed a season-ending ACL tear, the team confirmed Monday.

The quarterback went down late in the fourth quarter after cutting back into the field instead of stepping out of bounds at the end of a quarterback scramble. Backup C.J. Beathard is expected to replace him under center when San Francisco faces the Chargers on Sunday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak to the media at 4:00. The team had acquired him in a trade with the New England Patriots during the middle of last season for a second round pick. He's played in 13 games with nine starts.

Savage's run as a starter was unimpressive at best, winning just 2 of 7 contests while completing 57.5-percent of his throws with a 5:7 touchdown:interception ratio.

"It's huge having already played a year ago in six games", he said after the game. It's not my first time in the regular season.
