Legionella bacteria detected in Sands Resort water system, Order issued

Tenants say they are frustrated with the city's Department of Health for not telling them sooner about two cases of Legionnaires' disease in their building.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has identified the source of the deadly Legionnaires' outbreak as the Sands Resort at 32 Ashworth Avenue in Hampton Beach.

The New Hampshire Division of Public Health will provide another update on the Hampton outbreak on Tuesday.

Legionnaire's disease is a bacterial pneumonia spread by inhaling droplets of water contaminated with the bacteria.

Officials said tenants can still use and drink water "but tenants at higher risk of getting Legionnaires' disease will be advised to take additional precautions". One of those 14 Hampton victims, an elderly man, died due to complications related to the disease, state officials said.

The NH DHHS says tests carried about by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC "detected the presence of the Legionella bacteria from multiple sources within the Sands Resort water system, including but not limited hot tub spa".

The disease can not be spread through person-to-person contact, nor by drinking contaminated water.

Martin said upon interviewing the Nashua patients, health officials determined the cases were not connected to the Hampton outbreak.

Legionnaires' disease symptoms are very similar to other types of pneumonia and can include a cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches.

Although most people exposed to Legionella will not get sick, it can cause severe illness and sometimes result in death.

Legionnaires' disease is treated with antibiotics and often requires hospitalization.
