'Horrific' limo crash in New York State claims 20 lives

All 20 people killed in the crash are being memorialized at a vigil Monday, including passengers Amanda Rivenburg, Rachael Cavosie, and Savannah Bursese.

Relatives of the deceased said the group in the limo was headed to a birthday party when it crashed in the town of Schoharie, about 40 miles west of state capital Albany.

One of those on board had sent a message 20 minutes before the crash, complaining that the stretch limousine, a 17-year-old Ford Excursion, was in a "terrible condition".

"It's tragic. terrible. I can't even begin to even explain".

Newly-weds Erin and Shane McGowan were just starting a life together after five months of marriage, the Times Union reported.

Patrick Cushing, who worked for the New York State Senate, and his girlfriend, Amanda Halse, also died in the crash.

There were newlyweds and young couples and four sisters, all on their way to revel at an upstate NY brewery.

"They were two very young, attractive people", said Abeling.

"They now have no parents", Douglas said. "Not only did they lose a child, but they lost four of their attractive daughters and their husbands".

"They did the responsible thing getting a limo so they wouldn't have to drive anywhere", their aunt, Barbara Douglas, told reporters on Sunday (Monday NZT).

A person with knowledge of the investigation into the crash tells The Associated Press that 18 of the victims were in the limousine.

Calls to the families of the other victims were not returned, and The Washington Post is withholding their names until they can be confirmed by relatives.

"He will be sorely missed by his sister and her children", Douglass said.

"She was a handsome, sweet soul; he was, too, they were very sweet", Abeling said. "They were two very young, lovely people" who "had everything going for them".

It was the deadliest transportation accident since February 2009, when Colgan Air Flight 3407 crashed in Buffalo, New York, killing 50 people, Sumwalt said.

At the news conference, Fiore didn't comment on the limo's speed, or whether the limo occupants were wearing seat belts.
