Israel bombs Gaza after Palestinian militants fire rockets

Israeli aircraft struck several militant sites across the Gaza Strip early Saturday shortly after militants fired rockets into southern Israel, the Israeli military said.

Meanwhile, a young Palestinian man has died less than a day after being shot by Israeli military forces during clashes between a group of Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces near the border between the Gaza Strip and the occupied territories.

The Israeli army launched at least 87 air strikes, Israeli news outlet Ynet reported, saying it was in response to some 34 rockets fired from the enclave into southern Israel.

"After contacts between the Islamic Jihad leadership and the brothers in Egypt it was agreed that a comprehensive ceasefire will begin immediately", spokesman Daoud Shehab said. It accused the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Iran's Al- Quds Force of being behind the bombardments.

Egyptian security officials have been talking separately to Israeli and Palestinian leaders in an attempt to restore calm along the border.

The IDF's statement comes after the Israeli military announced that it had attacked 87 facilities of the Hamas movement, which the IDF considers responsible for all aggressive actions from the Hamas-controlled territory of the Gaza Strip.

More than 30 launches were identified from Gaza beginning late Friday, the Israeli military said, and about a dozen were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.

Gaza's Ministry of Health, meanwhile, said that air strikes had targeted the perimeter of the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip, causing material damages to the building.

There has been no immediate comment from Israel on truce.

The escalation followed violence earlier Friday along the fence that separates Gaza and Israel. According to Manelis, Israel anticipates that Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman's resolution to allow deliveries of gasoline purchased from Qatar into Gaza will shift the situation in the region.

The biggest rocket attacks in months came despite talk of progress towards an Egyptian-brokered deal to end months of often violent protests along the border in return for an easing of Israel's crippling 11-year blockade.

A fifth protester succumbed to his wound Saturday, the Health Ministry said.

About 2 million Palestinians are packed into the Gaza Strip, which is in a deep economic crisis.

One Israeli soldier was shot dead by a Palestinian sniper along the border in the same period.

Throughout the seven-year war, Israel has already carried out scores of airstrikes in Syria, mostly against suspected Iranian weapons shipments to Hezbollah but also against the Iranians themselves.

These demonstrations take place each Friday, regularly sending massive amounts of thick smoke into the Israeli communities nearby, as Palestinians burn tires along the border and send incendiary devices affixed to balloons into Israel to spark fires.
