Kelly's 'Blackface' remarks amplify Halloween costume debate

Megyn Kelly appears to be on her way out at "Today", according to sources who told The Washington Post that her show will stop airing after her comment about blackface being OK when she was a child. She was genuinely asking why specifically on Halloween is putting on blackface offensive if the intention was to be respectful and not racist.

Kelly's time at NBC has been plagued by controversy and low ratings, as many industry insiders felt the former primetime cable news star was not a fit for morning television. Friday the network confirmed her 9 am hour would never air again and would instead be backfilled by other Today talent. "Because you get in trouble if you're a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on white face for Halloween... back when I was a kid that was OK, as long as you were dressing like a character". NBC late night host Seth Meyers and writer Amber Ruffin mocked her in a whole standalone skit.

When asked by USA Today whether Fox News would be keen to have Kelly return, a spokesperson replied: "We are extremely happy with our entire lineup".

Kelly, 47, made her debut as NBC morning TV host on September 25, 2017, taking over the 9am slot of Today and saying she wanted viewers "to have a laugh with us, a smile, sometimes a tear and maybe a little hope to start your day".

Few co-star dynamics are quite as complicated as those on NBC's "Today" show. Kelly last month publicly called for NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack to appoint outside investigators to look into why the network didn't air Ronan Farrow's stories about disgraced Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein and allowed him to take the material to the New Yorker.

"Megyn Kelly Today is not returning", the network said in a statement. Al Roker and Craig Melvin strongly criticized Kelly's comments during the 7 a.m. hour of "Today" on Wednesday.

Kelly made her controversial remarks on her show on Tuesday.

Will you miss Megyn Kelly Today?

Megyn Kelly speaks onstage at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit 2018 at Ritz Carlton Hotel on October 2, 2018 in Laguna Niguel, Calif. Yes, but the stake she was burned at had already been erected well before her discussion about Diana Ross. "In fact, many of them like it". "She is not ever coming back".

Then on February 1, 2017, NBC made the abrupt announcement: Hall left the network the day before, on the day her contract was up.

This is an opinion piece.
