Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez signs 'most lucrative' deal with sports service DAZN

Mayweather aimed a swipe at Alvarez, who signed a £280million ($365m) eleven-fight deal with boxing's newest streaming service.

In the crossover from Mayweather's retirement to Alvarez's ensuing dominance up the weight classes, the pay-per-view crown was nearly passed over to the Latino fighter.

HBO had the right of first negotiation and a last-look provision for the upcoming fight in NY, but after DAZN threw down its bid, the premium cable channel backed off. Álvarez is a part of Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, and the organization has had a long relationship with HBO.

"There's no doubt about the appeal of boxing in the UK", Skipper said.

"It's very important for me to finish this year off strong", he told SN.

The deal also dictates that Golden Boy put on ten "high-calibre" fight nights per year that will stream on DAZN from 2019. In total, the larger Golden Boy partnership could be worth as much as $500 million, according to another person familiar with the deal. Already a major digital network for global soccer, the service is emphasizing combat sports in its US debut because fights are major events and the rights to major league team sports are already spoken for.

Golovkin, who was also with HBO, has not agreed a deal with a new US TV network yet and his move could signal how likely he is to have a third fight with Alvarez in the near future. He has a 50-1-2 career record with 34 KOs. After an initial draw, the Mexican triumphed last month. DAZN later added the World Boxing Super Series and mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion Bellator to round off an impressive initial combat sports offering.

That deal included a total of 16 bouts each year across the United States on top of Matchroom's existing 16 fight nights in the UK. We are in the direct-to-consumer business.

The Alvarez deal follows DAZN's first major US agreement, an eight-year, $1 billion joint venture with United Kingdom promotion Matchroom Boxing. He will meet Rocky Fielding in a 12-round, super middleweight bout December 15, 2018.

And because of those financial issues, Mayweather is now talking up another comeback - in fights against UFC superstar Khabib Nurmagomedov and WBA "regular" welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.
