‘Venom’ Breaks Records, ‘A Star Is Born’ Shines At The Box Office

A poorly reviewed Marvel movie from Sony Corp. outdrew Lady Gaga's widely acclaimed remake of "A Star Is Born" at the North American box office, proving a superhero and lots of special effects still rule the day with film fans.

The movie made an estimated 80 million dollars in the USA, which is enough to set a new record for best October weekend box office. The plot follows a journalist Eddie Brock who is bound to an alien symbiote that gives him superpowers. Pictures. The film has earned an epic 205.2 million dollars globally, a new record for the month, according to studio figures collected by comScore. The 43-year-old actor co-wrote the script, directed and produced the movie as well as starring in it. Despite a 32 percent "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the anti-hero "Spider-Man" spinoff "Venom" opened with $205.2 million globally.

The pooch at the center of dog-lover's collective post-"A Star Is Born" meltdown is also Cooper's real-life canine pal, a rescue dog who he cast as the companion for himself and on-screen love Ally (Lady Gaga). It exceeded expectations by taking in almost $43 million dollars. The film, which is the fourth "A Star Is Born" since 1937, has built up huge buzz for its emotional story, strong performances and solid direction from first time director and star Bradley Cooper.

In the film, Cooper has said during press rounds, Ally and his character, Jackson Maine, don't have children. The comic family animation tells the story of a group of Yeti who come across a human, with voicing by Channing Tatum, LeBron James and Danny DeVito.

Universal's comedy "Night School" moved to fourth with an estimated 12.27 million dollars in its second weekend.

Fifth place went to Universal's family-friendly offering "The House With a Clock in Its Walls", which slipped from third place last weekend with takings of $7.3 million.
