Woman stabs 14 kids in Chinese kindergarten

At least 14 preschool children have been injured in southwest China after a woman with a kitchen knife attacked them in the playground.

The attacker was a 39-year-old woman only identified by her surname, Liu, the local police said on China's version of Twitter, Weibo. Video from the scene appeared to show angry onlookers hitting and kicking the woman after she was detained.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The knife attack happened at about 9:30 am on the morning of Friday, October 26, 2018, at the gate of Xinshiji Kindergarten in Banan District of China's southwestern city of Chongqing.

Violent crime is relatively rare in China, but it has faced a string of unrelated knife attacks in school and kindergartens in recent years.

Footage posted on social media showed injured children walking to ambulances from the school gate, with some being placed on gurneys.

Reports said a woman attacked children inside the school with a kitchen knife in the morning.

Police are now investigating and no motive has been given for the attack.

Such assaults have been blamed largely on the mentally ill or people bearing grudges. Last month, China executed a man convicted of killing nine students and injuring 11 in a knife attack at a middle school in the central province of Shaanxi.

Nearly 20 children were killed in school attacks in 2010, prompting a response from top government officials and leading many schools to add gates and security guards.
