Lampard passes management test as Chelsea given Halloween fright

Derby manager Lampard, who enjoyed 13 hugely successful years as a Chelsea player, watched his side put up a fearless fight against their Premier League opponents, twice levelling the match after calamitous own goals. Maurizio Sarri's men were handed an early lead through Fikayo Tomori's unfortunate own goal before Jack Marriott restored parity for the visitors shortly thereafter.

Willy Caballero starts in goal and Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been named in the front three for Chelsea against Derby County in the Carabao Cup.

He said: "Gary played for the first time in a while".

Ross Barkley seized his chance to shine in Hazard's absence and scored a goal as well as making two assists in a 4-0 win against Burnley at Turf Moor last weekend. I thought they played really well today.

Zola also had kind words for Chelsea loanee Mason Mount, who will play against his parent club for Derby at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

"On current form, I think he is".

As former Chelsea and Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri looked on from the stands, there was a minute's applause before kick-off in tribute to Leicester's late Thai owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, killed in a helicopter crash on Saturday.

Davide Zappacosta has played just six minutes in the Premier League but could be rewarded with a fourth start of the season, with his other three all coming in the Europa League. The Premier League is a different level. Derby assistant Jody Morris, victor of seven trophies in two seasons in charge of the Blues' under-18 and under-19 sides before leaving to team up with Lampard, also got his moment of appreciation at the final whistle.

"He is certainly much better", Zola told his pre-match media conference on Tuesday ahead of their League Cup clash against Derby County. Buoyed by his side's win on penalties at Old Trafford against his former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in the previous round, he was dismayed to witness the errors from his side, which made their task all the harder.

The Belgian forward has also won two League Cups, the FA Cup and the Europa League during his six-season stint at Stamford Bridge following a move from Lille in 2012.

DF David Luiz, 6 - Brought on for Christensen to give Chelsea greater defensive solidity, he broadly did his job as Derby pushed in vain for an equaliser in the final 20 minutes. "So we didn't have control of the game".

The lead was short lived as Mason Mount, another Blues loanee, laid on Martyn Waghorn's leveller after 27 minutes.

Derby did well to break down United in historic fashion during the third round, but it will take a lot for Lampard to continue his fairytale story during his upcoming homecoming.
