Liverpool on brink of Champions League exit after all-star display by PSG

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hit out at the referee and Neymar as his side slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday that leaves last season's runners-up dangerously close to an early Champions League exit.

If they beat the Italian side 1-0, they will advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

"If the referee lets that happen you have to deal with that as a team".

'We should do the same at times.

For all his rolling-around antics Neymar can turn it on in a flash and, having collected the ball 25 yards inside his own half, he shook off compatriot Roberto Firmino and exchanged passes with Mbappe before releasing his pacy team-mate down the left. If we don't do that we don't deserve to be in the Champions League and we'll take whatever happens from there - Europa League or whatever.

"But it is only a story if I say it, and then I look like a bad loser". That's it in a nutshell.

Klopp said after the game that his team were made to look like "butchers" in Paris due to the number of times Neymar and his teammates were awarded free kicks, but Milner said he was not surprised by Neymar's performance. "We have a big game at the weekend so that helps but we knew it was a tough group all along, the Champions League is tough", the Reds' vice-captain added. The victor of the match will advance in the Champions League.

The official also appeared to be persuaded to give a penalty to Liverpool - converted by James Milner - after seemingly initially gesturing for a corner when Angel Di Maria brought down Sadio Mane in the box.

"PSG are a great team with some great players and don't need to resort to these tactics".

"That is not the kind of play you would associate with Liverpool but it is a change Klopp made in pre-season and he has carried it through the start of this campaign". It is what the best teams do.

'We got the penalty, actually, the ref didn't want to give it, I have no clue how that's possible, ' Klopp told Viasport. It was an important game and everybody tries to do it like they have to.

'You don't see any of the lads panicking, we are comfortable we can go and finish the job at home. How many yellow cards did we have?

"We never do it the easy way".

The French champions have failed to secure a win in their last five games against Premier League opposition.
