Mourinho sends a message to his lovers after Champions League progress

Mourinho made his frustration known by letting out an undoubtedly cathartic cheer, jumping and fist-pumping the air, just as any manager celebrating a last minute victor would.

And it somewhat goes without saying that De Gea, voted the club's best player four times in five years, should be made the highest paid player at United by some considerable distance.

Marouane Fellaini struck in injury time to give Manchester United a late victory over Young Boys and send Jose Mourinho's side into the Champions League knockout stages.

Though United did emerge victorious on Tuesday, they could have easily gone a goal down in the second half.

"But, in the end, we qualify in a very hard group with one match in hand, suffering a lot, but we did it".

The United manager stopped short of using such cutting soundbites on the eve of the Young Boys encounter but shed a light on the issues he faces.

"They had moments of good football, hypothetical lovely goals, but then also moments of pressure, a lack of confidence that frustrated us".

"I've played Champions League 14 times and qualified [for the last 16] 14 times", he said. "And the year where I didn't play Champions League I won the Europa League twice". Do you think I should smile?' Not many of them were there, can myself or another manager have a reaction of frustration?

"Now, I must say as a centre-forward, if I saw my manager react like that I would be absolutely livid".

"I think the mood is good".

Mourinho bristled when quizzed about that selection before kick-off and pointed to onlookers "always asking" him to play Marcus Rashford - a player who missed a fine chance in the opening minutes and numerous more over the course of the night.

And it appeared Mourinho was still in a spiky mood immediately after the game.

Lineker said on BT Sport: "Looking at his bench and then shaking his head".

Key stat: Fellaini has now scored nine match-winning goals for Manchester United.

"But, no, you say, "You left big names outside".
