Sterling strikes twice as City hit Saints for six

I have the feeling he is now enjoying scoring goals and making assists and being important in winning players.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has spoken about his side's 6-1 rout over Southampton on Sunday, while also naming the player he thinks is the best penalty-taker in the Premier League.

"I thought it was a great team performance", Sterling said.

Kyle Walker has denied Manchester City's players are affected by the supporters' inability to warm to the Champions League even though he admits it is far tougher for them to play in more hostile atmospheres away from home than it is for visiting teams to the Etihad.

They settled for six goals in the end - the fourth time in 11 Premier League games that they have scored at least five times in a game - and might easily have scored more had the occasion demanded more ruthlessness.

Guardiola's City now sit at the top of the Premier League table with 29 points, followed closely by Chelsea and Liverpool at 27 points each. "We spoke about that in training and said try to score goals".

Kevin De Bruyne has assisted six goals in his last 12 Champions League appearances for Manchester City, including one against Shakhtar on MD3 - all assists have been for different players (David Silva, John Stones, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, Ilkay Gundogan and Aymeric Laporte).

It appeared City were capable of scoring nearly at will and a slick move saw them make it three in the 18th minute. "But you have to hold your hands up, City are a very good team". Junior Moraes, who has 14 goals this term, should lead the line.

Sterling looks set to play a key part in every City move going forward and is clearly highly rated by Pep Guardiola and his playing staff.

Those matches are the nearest you get to being softer opposition in the Premier League given Saints' upcoming fixtures.

Southampton improved at the start of the second half, with James Ward-Prowse and Ings - via wicked deflection off Fernandinho - forcing Ederson to make fine stops. "Before that we played well against Liverpool but could not make up the deficit from the first leg, the game was over before the last 20 minutes, and the defeat by Basel did not matter because we were already qualified".

- Aguero scored his 150th Premier League goal in his 217th appearance - only Alan Shearer (212 games) has scored 150 in fewer games in Premier League history.
