California Police Arrest Illegal Immigrant Cop-Killer Suspect

Ronil Singh of the tiny Newman Police Department, said Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson, whose agency is leading the investigation. "It's a conversation we need to have".

Christianson spoke at the news conference about making laws stricter as Singh's brother wept beside him.

Singh, 33, pulled over the suspect just before 1 a.m. Wednesday and a few moments later called out "shot fired" over the radio. He was sent north in the slain officer's handcuffs, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said.

Ronil Singh are: Gustavo Perez Arriaga, who turned 32 on Friday; his brother, Adrian Virgen, 25; and co-worker Erik Razo Quiroz, 32.

Following up on leads in the case, Stanislaus County detectives and other law enforcement officers conducted a search of a farmhouse in El Nido on Thursday, but no sign of the shooting suspect was discovered.

"This is a criminal illegal alien with prior criminal activity that should have been reported to ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement)", the sheriff said.

Newman's police chief said the department and its 12 sworn officers were grieving.

Authorities believe the suspect - who is in the United States illegally - was in hiding in Stanislaus County, but Facebook photos have surfaced of the man also spending time in the Bay Area.

"We can't ignore the fact that this could've been preventable", he said, adding that California Senate Bill 54 - which became law a year ago - prohibited his department "from sharing any information with ICE about this criminal gang member".

"This suspect is in our country illegally".

Cpl. Ronal Singh, who came to the USA from his native Fiji, was shot early Wednesday after stopping the man he suspected of driving drunk in Newman. If the suspect had been deported, he said, Cpl.

Several people were also arrested on suspicion of helping Arriaga evade law enforcement and lying to detectives about him, authorities said.

Trump tweeted about the shooting on Thursday, days after the December 22 partial shutdown of the federal government. Ronil Singh in a tweet Thursday that ended with the demand: "Build the wall!" "Yes he was a police officer, but more importantly he was a human being", said Richardson.

"The type of tone and attitude that Sheriff Christianson has taken instills fear and panic in all immigrant communities" that could make people afraid to report crimes, de Leon said.

"This is a man that I saw every day he worked".

Richardson said Singh was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and riding his jet ski.

He was a reserve officer for the Merced County Sheriff and worked as an animal control officer in Turlock before he joined the Newman force. He had a thick accent but took speech classes to improve his communication, the chief said.
