Four Dead Amid Car Blast, Shooting in Southern Iranian Port of Chabahar

The Tasnim news agency said there were reports that women and children were among the injured.

Ground Force Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour told semi-official Tasmin News Agency such a "blind terrorist attack" would achieve no results.

While rare, Iran has been targeted in recent years by militant attacks. No militant group immediately took responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi also denounced the "malicious and inhumane terror attack, which he said was aimed at disrupting Iran's economic development, which is underway in cooperation with regional states".

A coordinated June 2017 Islamic State assault on parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, killed at least 18 people and wounded more than 50.

Sistan-Baluchistan province, where the bombing hit, has always been a flashpoint, with a number of attacks reported in recent past.

In October, the separatist Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice) group kidnapped 12 Iranian border guards in the remote province, five of whom have since been released.

That attack was claimed by the Sunni separatist group Jundullah (or Soldiers of God), which has claimed responsibility for bombings in the past. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, blamed Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for the attack, allegations denied by both countries. "As we've made clear in the past, such crimes won't go unpunished", Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted. Mark my words: "Iran WILL bring terrorists & their masters to justice".

Chabahar lies some 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of the Pakistan border and is home to a large, mainly Sunni Muslim ethnic Baluchi community which straddles the two countries.

Pakistan has strongly denounced a terrorist attack in Iranian port city of Chahbahar, that claimed lives of at least three innocent people while injuring forty others.

It hosts the operation of a joint port project between Iran and India. "There can be no justification for any act of terror", the MEA said.
