NYPD searches for couple after their proposal goes sideways at Times Square

Police announced Saturday that special operations personnel had made an important breakthrough in the case: they had found (and cleaned) the ring.

NY police are trying to find the ring's owners.

Police in NY have taken to social media to track down a man who dropped an engagement ring through a grate in Times Square as he knelt down to propose.

The couple asked police for help, but emergency service officers could not immediately find the sparkler. Police have shared pictures of the footage from security cameras in the hope they will help them make sure the ring gets back to its rightful owners.

The woman is blond, and the man is brown-haired and bearded and wearing a gray cap.

The NYPD's official Twitter feed posted a photo of the ring.

The only problem: The NYPD is still searching for the couple.

He was so excited when she said yes he promptly dropped the ring down a grate underfoot.

More than 350,000 people visit Times Square in midtown Manhattan every day.
