Politics, race, music dominate Golden Globe film nominations

Politics, race, music dominate Golden Globe film nominations

And to prove how perspicacious the Hollywood Foreign Press can be, it awarded Sacha Baron Cohen a stealth nod for best actor in comedy series for Showtime's "Who Is America?", presenting a threat to Douglas, Donald Glover ("Atlanta"), Jim Carrey ("Kidding") and this year's Emmy victor Bill Hader ("Barry"). (McQueen's previous film, 12 Years a Slave, won the Globes' top honor.) The same goes for Saoirse Ronan's well-reviewed Mary Queen of Scots and the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex (in which Felicity Jones is very, very good!). Yet for an industry still grappling with issues pertaining to inclusion, and an award-show apparatus wrestling with a movie business increasingly reliant on superheroes and science fiction, an Oscar nod to "Black Panther" would, indeed, represent a noteworthy gesture, in more ways than one, toward Hollywood's new realities.

The Golden Globes is set to air on January 6 with hosts Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg.

A whole awards ceremony of that?

Samberg hosted the Emmy Awards in 2015, but it will be Oh's first time hosting a major awards show.

Michael B. Jordan had a banner year, both critically and at the box office, with his tour de force supporting performance in "Black Panther", and then reprising his role as Adonis Creed in "Creed II".

Who will host the 2019 Golden Globes? .

In the drama category, the competition includes two movies that explore racial injustice: If Beale Street Could Talk, and BlacKkKlansman.

Lucas Hedges, who said earlier this year that he was "not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual", was also nominated for best actor in a drama film for his portrayal of main character Jared Eamons. Though Elisabeth Moss picked up a nomination in the latter category this time around, the show was shut out of the best drama category.

Once again, female directors didn't get any nominations this year, despite star Natalie Portman's criticizing the HFPA for ignoring women behind the camera when she announced the 2017 nominees. Oh, meanwhile, now stars (and serves as co-executive producer) on BBC America's "Killing Eve", for which she was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama at this year's Emmys.

"We know that if we want to live in a world that looks more like Wakanda, the first step is you invest in women and girls", Gurira said at The Hollywood Reporter's 2018 Women in Entertainment event. Streisand is the only one to win, for Yentl in 1984.
