American Neo-Gothic? Schumer, Pelosi's Trump Criticism Speech Laughed at Online

Trump and other administration officials have been trying to make the case that the situation at the border has reached a crisis point, both on national security and humanitarian grounds. His Tuesday evening remarks were to be followed by a televised rebuttal from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who strongly oppose the wall and have repeatedly called on Trump to reopen shuttered portions of the government while border negotiations continue.

The president was on Capitol Hill to rally support of Senate Republican amid a government shutdown that has lasted almost three weeks.

And it seems that this development did not escape the watchful eye of political commentator Ben Shapiro as well.

"Rubio also said he would have liked Trump, during his Oval Office address Tuesday, to clarify the $5.7 billion he wants for border security funding would not be for a wall or for a loan, but instead would be "$5 billion to fund the top 10 projects on a border security program by the experts and the people in charge of doing that".

"I think certainly I have expressed more than a few times the frustrations with a government shutdown and how useless it is", Capito said Tuesday.

"I just addressed the nation on Border Security. And there is a real toll for federal workers as this shutdown drags on".

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Trump slammed his hand on the table and walked out.

New U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan says she's willing to discuss providing funding for Trump's proposed wall, but says the shutdown needs to end first.

There was no sign Trump was backing down from his demand for $5.7 billion for the border wall in exchange for ending the shutdown. He sees it as an absolute necessity to stop what he calls a crisis of illegal immigration, drug-smuggling and human trafficking at the border. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said she wants border security.

"He thinks maybe they could just ask their father for more money". Sadly much of what we heard from President Trump throughout this senseless shutdown has been full of misinformation and even malice.

But she added, "The fact is, the women and children at the border are not a security threat, they are a humanitarian challenge - a challenge that President Trump's own cruel and counterproductive policies have only deepened".

Trump has said he can relate to the plight of the federal workers who aren't getting paid, though he acknowledged they will have to "make adjustments". But he did not mention that Tuesday night.

"They don't come in through checkpoints, they come through areas where you have hundreds of miles without walls and without barrier or without strong fences", Mr. Trump said at the Capitol.

Speaking from the Rose Garden last week, President Donald Trump claimed that eventual economic benefits from a trade deal with Mexico and Canada meant he was keeping his campaign promise.

Trump and Democrats remain at an impasse over border wall funding, with Trump so far refusing to agree to a spending bill that does not include border wall funding and Democrats refusing to support legislation that does fund a border wall. But one person said it was unclear whether Trump was serious or joking.
