Gabriel Jesus fired up by Manchester City’s blistering start to year

City boss Pep Guardiola labelled talk of a quadruple as "fantasy" earlier in the week, but after cruising into the League Cup final in midweek, the English champions are in contention for a clean sweep of trophies as they challenge Liverpool in the Premier League and face Schalke in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Premier League champions maintained their interest in four competitions as they thrashed the Clarets 5-0 in their fourth-round tie at the Etihad Stadium.

Kevin De Bruyne scored one and had a hand in two others, with Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero scoring along with an own-goal.

City is second in the Premier League, four points behind Liverpool, and into the final of the English League Cup against Chelsea on February 24.

While three of those games have come against League One opposition, Guardiola said his players have shown the desire that will be needed if they are to secure silverware this season.

"But I think they have to decide for themselves". Juventus, Bayern Munich, Barcelona - these are the best three teams in the last decade in Europe. Why?

Hudson-Odoi is closer to completing his move to Bayern Munich after rejecting a new offer from the Blues last week. We are out of the Cup, which I have a lot of respect for, but our bigger goal is the Premier League.

It adds a fascinating angle to what is shaping up to be a memorable title race between the two north-west giants although there is no doubt Liverpool's players have the advantage in terms of rest and recovery. The Cup [against Burnley], win the game, get through. The Belgium playmaker wants to play as often as possible to improve his match sharpness and he appears to be getting back to his best.

"I could say it's because we played against lower league sides but even in that position you have to score goals, it's never easy". It's a privilege. When you are 35 years old you can have long holidays. If you believe it's a handicap, that's a big mistake. It's hard to buy top, top players at a good price. "We want to go through and we want to play the later stages".
