GOP Senators Sided With Democrats on Border Wall Funding

Earlier, Trump announced that he will sign a bill to open the government for three weeks until this date. He also said he was not looking to build a concrete wall along the entire southern border.

With the effects of the shutdown spreading on Friday, Trump said a bipartisan congressional conference committee would meet to come up with a plan for border security.

But the idea has not been endorsed by President Trump, who says any short-term deal must include a large down-payment for a border wall - an idea Pelosi and Schumer immediately rejected. She said, "That is not a reasonable agreement between the senators".

On the 35th day of the partial government shutdown - the longest-ever in US history - President Donald Trump announced that a deal has been reached to temporarily reopen it with no funding for a wall on the southern border. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Trump has been briefed on the airport delays and was monitoring the situation.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been furloughed or, as with some airport workers, required to work without pay.

Senate Democrats were instead hoping to pass a temporary spending bill to reopen the government through February 8. "These barriers are made of steel, have see-through visibility, which is very important, and are equipped with sensors, monitors and cutting-edge technology, including state-of-the-art drones".

But he hinted that he was still considering taking unilateral action if efforts to come up with money for his wall fail. "As everyone knows I have a very powerful alternative but I didn't want to use it at this time".

The deal announced by Trump is a three-week stopgap spending bill that would reopen government while negotiations over a new budget continue.

LaGuardia Airport on Friday morning before lifting it about an hour later. And the world's busiest airport - Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport - was experiencing long security wait times, a warning sign the week before it expects 150,000 out-of-town visitors for the Super Bowl.

Trump's promise of a border wall was central to his 2016 campaign, and he viewed the standoff as a way to show supporters that he was trying to follow through. Mitt Romney (R-UT), one of the six Republicans who voted for the Democratic bill, explained his vote to the group. Sen. "We are in touch with them".

Asked if he would support the plan, discussed in private by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer, Trump was noncommittal, saying he would still want funding for his wall.

The short-term fix gives closed government agencies temporary finances to allow them to reopen and pay the 800,000 federal workers who have gone without pay for more than a month.

The official start of the tax filing season comes Monday.

The longest such shutdown in US history has left 800,000 federal workers as well as private contractors without pay and struggling to make ends meet, with the effects on government services and the economy reverberating nationwide. The employees had been told to work without pay. US President Donald Trump on Thursday told Mexico's president to cancel an upcoming visit to Washington if he is unwilling to foot the bill for a border wall.

Trump said on Thursday he would accept such a measure only if it included a "prorated down payment" on the border wall.

Today, as he postponed the showdown for three weeks, Mr Trump again praised the virtues of a wall. Many workers missed their second paycheck on Friday.
